Located in the heart of one of the most glamorous Italian cities, Mandarin Oriental, Milan is an effortlessly stylish destination like no other.
Here, Area Vice President of Operations and General Manager Luca Finardi shares design details that set the hotel apart, unique experiences the team can create for guests and the most delicious souvenirs to bring home with you.

"The atmosphere in the hotel’s guestrooms and suites reflects the calm and neutral side of the Milanese style. Tones of beige are delicately combined with black and white in the colour scheme to give these private spaces a quiet, understated feel, which is enhanced by superb acoustic damping."

Can you tell us about the design of Mandarin Oriental, Milan?

The multi-disciplinary design practice Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel was commissioned to create a design that gave a sense of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s visual richness within a Milanese environment. The result is classic Milanese style that coexists with strongly decorative materials and intense colours, with the overall look nuanced by Citterio’s typical design language, neutral and rigorous.

The work of several Italian design masters inspired the project, and this is particularly clear in two of our signature suites – the Fornasetti suite, which pays homage to great designer Piero Fornasetti and to his mesmerising world, and the Premier suite, which features iconic design pieces from Gio Ponti to Luigi Caccia Dominioni.

Last but not least, our Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, with its black and white marble mosaic covering floor and walls, is an eclectic touch to the overall hotel design.

What are three fascinating things about the property that set it apart from other hotels?

  1. A various food and beverage proposal, from 2 Michelin-star restaurant Seta by Antonio Guida to the Mandarin Bar & Bistrot, with its vibrant atmosphere and great cocktails.

  2. An holistic 900 square metre Spa based on the Feng Shui principles, with the largest indoor heated swimming pool in the city centre.

  3. The perfect balance between the genius loci and the Group’s legendary Oriental heritage, reflected in the exemplary levels of service.

What design touches does Mandarin Oriental, Milan bring into rooms and suites to make them feel like someone’s home-away-from-home?

Upholstered headboards and other furniture items in several shades of beige complement the purple velvet of armchairs, curtains and carpets. Each bed is “embraced” by its arched headboard to create an intimate feel, with the bed immersed, yet separate from the rest of the room, and sofa backrests feature this same bended form, as an invitation to relaxation.

Can you share the most unique experience the team has designed for a guest?

I’m glad to affirm that the team possesses a great expertise in designing unique experiences. I love that our guests can really enjoy Milan – and not only Milan – as an insider, giving the chance to visit private palazzos, ateliers, mansions and meeting inspiring personalities in design, art, fashion and culture.

Which dish should guests not miss on the menu?

The classic Risotto alla Milanese, but it’s our secret recipe!

What cocktail is a must-try at the hotel?

The perfect Negroni, prepared by our Head Bartender, Antonio Rosato.

Ingredients:

30 ml Tanqueray
40 ml red vermouth Cocchi
45 ml bitter Campari

Stir ingredients in a mixing glass and serve in an iced glass with an orange zest.

If a guest wanted to experience Milan like a local, what are three things that should be on their to-do list?

  1. A walk up the 250 steps to the top of the Duomo for an unforgettable view of the city.

  2. A visit to the Atelier of the great architect and designer Achille Castiglioni, the mind behind some of the most iconic 20th Century design pieces.

  3. Stroll the charming streets around Via Lincoln, with its colourful and picturesque houses.

Where in Milan would you suggest a guest go if they are seeking design inspiration?

I would suggest to visit Rossana Orlandi Gallery, a not-to-be-missed spot to find inspiring design proposals.

Can you share 3 to 5 off-the-beaten-path recommendations for food, coffee or drinks in Milan?

If you had to bring home one souvenir from Milan, what would that be?

A traditional dessert made by one of the famous and historical Milanese pastry shops such as Marchesi, Pasticceria Cova or Sant Ambroeus. And in December, a Panettone!
