Tell us about the design of Trout Point Lodge.

Our Main Lodge celebrates the Great Camps erected along the U.S. and Canadian Eastern Seaboard in the early 20th Century and is an architectural masterpiece made from giant Eastern Spruce logs featuring full scribe notch and dovetail joinery, chiseled granite and sandstone. Our three-story structure houses guest facilities, the Great Room, mezzanine library, dining rooms, kitchen and recreational facilities on the banks of two wilderness rivers. Replete with mica and Tiffany lamps, oriental rugs, and handmade log and twig furniture, all spacious guest rooms in the Great Lodge feature log walls and beam ceilings and full amenities. Many have hand-cut stone fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, porches or patios.

What are three fun facts about the property that many are surprised to learn?

  1. We are the world’s first Starlight Hotel and have some of North America’s darkest skies. Our staff astronomer conducts nightly stargazing excursions where the heavens come alive. It’s a highlight experience at Trout Point Lodge!
  2. All of our log and twig furniture is handmade from wood reclaimed from the forest when the lodge was built. No two pieces are the same.
  3. Our wilderness surroundings are home to more than 200 species of birds – our team spotted 75 identified species just this season – plus an amazing assortment of wildlife.

What touches do you believe make a room or suite feel like someone’s home-away-from-home?

It’s all about relaxation and being able to unplug from the stresses of modern life. Our rooms are TV and telephone-free by design. From the time our guests check in to the time they depart, we are able to provide a level of personalized service that is not possible at larger properties. The arrival welcome is very important to us, as we strive for all guests to feel immediately comfortable and welcomed in our wilderness oasis.

Our stunning location provides a beautiful backdrop for many experiences in nature, and when our guests return back to their suites, we want them to have all the creature comforts that they have at home and much more. Our luxurious beds are further enhanced with amazing Frette linens that ensure a great night’s sleep. Premium amenities and a fluffy Frette towel and robe after a nice relaxing bath is pure indulgence!

The Tobeatic Wilderness and glacial erratics along the Tusket River

In this modern era where most of our guests lead extremely hectic lives in busy cities, luxury is to be able to stand still, disconnect and have quality time for yourself and with loved ones. We strive to think of and provide our guests with everything they need, even before they know they need it.

Walk us through your ideal stay at Trout Point Lodge.

An ideal stay at Trout Point Lodge would be three to four nights. We have various curated packages for wellness, foodies, and romance, amongst others.

After a warm welcome and check-in, join our guide for a late afternoon activity like Forest Bathing – think of a slow meditative walk through our Acadian forests meant to reduce stress. Before dinner, join us for cocktails and try our famous Blueberry Moscow Mule or Forest Whisper cocktail with live music from our local Acadian musician. Sit down to a gourmet four-course Chef’s Menu that evening made from that day’s freshest local produce – a feast for all senses! Later in the evening, join our staff astronomer on our stargazing platform and watch our stars come alive. You might even catch a meteor shower or faint glimpses of the Aurora Borealis if you are lucky!

The next morning, start your day with a morning kayak on the Tusket River and admire the beautiful old-growth forests of the Tobeatic Wilderness and glacial erratics along the river. Enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch in the forest or in one of the many secluded locations around the lodge. In the afternoon, relax in our wood-fired hot tub and outdoor barrel sauna and enjoy the beautiful melodies of the rushing river before indulging in an in-room massage. Late afternoon, join our sommelier for a wine appreciation class focused on standard and advanced wine pairings and sample a variety of Nova Scotia’s best wines. Sleep comes easy in our luxurious suites with billowy duvets and premium Frette linens.

The following day after our luxurious continental breakfast, join in a culinary class with our award-winning kitchen team. Learn how to cook Acadian cuisine, like Rappie Pie, or join in a Nova Scotian Seafood Chowder class. After lunch, accompany our knowledgeable guide on a hike though our on-site trails and burn off some calories from your decadent lunch. For dinner that night, we would recommend dining alfresco on our garden patio with beautiful views of the Tusket River.

On the last morning, join in a morning sunrise yoga session or grab a book and simply relax in a hammock by the Tusket River.

What is your greatest indulgence at a hotel when you travel?

When we travel, we want to feel better than we do at home and have a really special meal. Sometimes it is not always possible at larger hotels. Because of our remote location, we make sure our on-site restaurant provides that special experience. Dining at Trout Point Lodge is a feast for your senses. From delicately prepared sustainable seafood, to the highest quality meat and produce procured from local partners, every dish tells the story of Trout Point Lodge’s special place among the wilderness woods, waters, stars and skies. Exquisite breads and desserts made fresh in-house and an award-winning wine list completes the picture. Our guests eat very well!

Can you share your go-to in-room dining order?

I recommend going for our Classic Caesar Salad or our Chef’s Soup of the Day as an appetizer, followed by either our homemade pasta with a basil pesto sauce and scallops or our Trout Point Famous Pork Schnitzel. Tough choices as our in-room menu is fantastic.

What is the most unique experience you’ve put together for a guest?

We had a guest who decided to propose to his girlfriend while he was here and we managed to put together a private stargazing experience, complete with champagne. Our team member had to hide in the bushes and when his girlfriend accepted, they raced back to our lodge to set up their suite with flower petals and candles. They loved it and it was the highlight of the year for our team!

If you only had 24 hours in East Kemptville, where would you visit?

We would definitely stay at and not leave Trout Point Lodge! We would explore our on-site trails and take advantage of the various complimentary unique experiences we offer such as forest bathing, guided hikes, kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards; and in the evening on a clear night, go stargazing as many people just do not have the opportunity to see stars the way we do if they live in cities.

What do you believe is the greatest hidden gem in East Kemptville?

The Tobeatic Wilderness. Spanning parts of five counties over 300,000 acres, the Tobeatic Wilderness Area is the largest wilderness area in the Maritimes. The lands that make up the Tobeatic Wilderness Area have long been recognized as a refuge for wildlife. I love the glacial erratics formed from the Ice age 18,000 years ago that you see all around our lodge.

In your opinion, what is the best time of year to visit Nova Scotia? Why?

The New York Times had said Trout Point Lodge is “Worth a visit no matter the season.” Every season at Trout Point Lodge is a completely different experience and we have guests that visit us several times each year. Spring brings new life and it’s wonderful to see the forest come back alive after resting over the winter. Summer months are fantastic for all outdoor experiences and Autumn is a stunning time at Trout Point Lodge when the fall colours are in their full splendour.

Why do you travel?

We travel to recharge, discover new places and to learn something new. We believe when people travel and learn about new cultures and new languages, it makes the world a better place.

How do you define luxury?

In this modern era where most of our guests lead extremely hectic lives in busy cities, luxury is to be able to stand still, disconnect and have quality time for yourself and with loved ones. We strive to think of and provide our guests with everything they need, even before they know they need it.

What does it feel like to wrap yourself in Frette?

It’s indulgent and pure joy. Nothing is more pampering than getting into a very comfortable bed specially prepared for you with luxurious, smooth and soft Frette sheets. There is also nothing more heavenly than wrapping oneself in a fluffy Frette towel after a relaxing hot bath. The best things in life are the simplest.
