Tell us about the design of Topping Rose House.

Our owners Bill Campbell and Simon Critchell worked closely with architect Roger Ferris and the designers at Champalimaud to marry the visions of this restored Hamptons home with a modern and luxurious year-round refuge. Each room is anchored by Madeline Weinrib’s unique rugs and our custom bedframes with plush bed linens by Frette. The property’s artwork, which carries a contemporary feel throughout, has been curated by Winston Wachter Gallery in New York City.

What are three fun facts about the property that many are surprised to learn?

The name Topping Rose House comes from our history. This was once the house of prominent local judge Abraham Topping Rose.

Our one-acre organic farm inspires our cuisine, produces most of our in-house flowers by late summer and yielded such a large tomato harvest last year that we gave them away to neighboring restaurants.

We’re pet friendly! Four-legged friends are welcome to stay all summer long in our Cottage Rooms.

What touches do you believe make a room or suite feel like someone’s home-away-from-home?

Honestly, we don’t want you to feel like you’re at home when you’re at Topping Rose House. We want your stay to feel indulgent – as if everything has been taken care of and you’re unplugged from “real life.” We want you to walk in, jump into the bed and sink into the coziness of it. Saunter down to breakfast where you’re catered to. Lounge by the pool with a cocktail. Soak in a bubble bath after a good massage. That’s the sort of escape we hope you experience and the rooms are just the first part of that.

Walk us through your ideal stay at Topping Rose House.

Ideally, I would check in, get situated and order a cocktail to the room. I’d toss on a robe and walk down to the sauna before enjoying a massage or relaxing by the library’s fireplace with a book. Around 7:00 PM, dinner begins with a cocktail at the bar from our resident bartender, Michael. Make sure you order the truffle pizza and salmon sushi.

After what I’m sure would be too much food and wine, I’ll sleep in until the last possible minute so I can still catch the complimentary breakfast. Following breakfast, I would head over to Sagg Main Beach to walk off some of my indulgences then visit Wolffer Estate or Channing Daughters for an afternoon glass of wine. Back at the hotel, I’ll ask the concierge to recommend a great spot for dinner and have them transport me there in the Topping Rose House Land Rover.

Following another wonderful night’s rest and breakfast, I’d be ready to hit the road with a quick bike ride around town. That’s my perfect stay…

Sometimes the simplest things feels luxurious when they are just so – the perfect comforter, an unexpected bouquet of flowers or an amazing hand cream you’ve just discovered.

What is your greatest indulgence at a hotel when you travel?

A massage. I love getting an hour of pampering in. It really makes the whole experience feel special and removes me from the day-to-day.

Can you share your go-to in-room dining order?

Our kale salad is amazing; it’s tossed with mint, sourdough croutons and a parmesan-heavy dressing. I take it with salmon, fries and a glass of rosé.

What is the most unique experience you’ve put together for a guest?

A few years ago, we arranged a family reunion for a set of lovely guests over a summer weekend. They wanted the full Hamptons experience – from a catamaran charter out of Sag Harbor and horseback riding to wine tasting, beach picnics and rooftop yoga. They were already happy to be in each other’s company, so it was fun and rewarding to see them enjoy our efforts in coordinating the best that the summer season has to offer out here.

If you only had 24 hours in The Hamptons, where would you visit?

Topping Rose House, of course! And any of the beaches – that’s what The Hamptons is famous for.

What do you believe is the greatest hidden gem in The Hamptons?

You really need to weave through the backroads out here. It’s worth getting lost on a bike. I’ve come across so many magical little ponds, bridges, antique stores and historic buildings – almost all accidentally.

In your opinion, what is the best time of year to visit The Hamptons? Why?

Personally, I love October. It’s still warm, so it’s perfect for beach strolls without so much humidity. The crowds have died down a bit; the farm harvests are in full swing; and all the restaurants are still open. It’s just as lovely as summer and a little more laid back.

Why do you travel?

I travel to open my mind. I love experiencing a new place through its geography, its food and its people. Travel’s introduced me to many wonderful people and broadened my horizons in ways I never could have imagined. I feel very fortunate to be a part of that heritage in hospitality.

How do you define luxury?

Out of the ordinary and undeniably special. Sometimes the simplest things feels luxurious when they are just so – the perfect comforter, an unexpected bouquet of flowers or an amazing hand cream you’ve just discovered.

What does it feel like to wrap yourself in Frette?

Indulgent, fresh and inviting.
